My downtown Boulder painting studio will be open to the public from noon to 6:00 pm this Saturday and Sunday October 8th and 9th. You’re so invited to stop by and say hello.
HIVE, an interdisciplinary show about bees, is up at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs through October 6th. I’m showing 100 paintings and two bee comb objects alongside works by Matt Barton, Susan Meyer, Jane McMahon and Elaine Ng.
One hundred paintings, encaustic and ink on panel, 5″ x 4″
Edie Adelstein reviewed the show on for the Colorado Springs Independent. You can read her thoughts in the captions below.
“Laura Tyler’s encaustic pieces, 100 in all, gradually reveal an incredible level of depth and technique.”
“Outwardly abstract shapes in green, deep blue and magenta hint at a bee’s compound vision of the world — …”
“…glimpses of leaves, petals and water that buzz by”
“In a theme that jives with the idea of community and colony, the works, though individually fragmented, all together link…”
- Edie Adelstein
Feeling grateful. It’s a big show and there’s a lot more to see. I’ll post images of the comb objects and the other artists’ works later this week.
You’re warmly invited to check out The Red Show at Art & Soul in Boulder.
Seven new encaustic paintings on the north wall at Art & Soul.
If you’re the kind of person who sometimes feels gallery-shy, this is a great chance to get out and enjoy some new paintings, all of them red, in a friendly, easygoing space. The Red Show was curated by artist Sarah Kinn who has assembled a group of surface-conscious, crimson, magenta and scarlet red paintings including works by Betsy Gill, Robert Spellman, Pattie Lee Becker,Evan Colbert and more. It’s a joy to participate.
(The biggie on the right is “This Bird Has Flown,” a 30″ x 30″ painting named after that beguiling and cryptic Beatles’ song also known as “Norwegian Wood.”)
“I once had a girl
Or should I say she once had me
She showed me her room
Isn’t it good Norwegian wood? . . .”

I’m finally feeling caught up (well, nearly so) after the madness that’s honey season x Open Studios.
Thanks to my friend Laurel Kallenbach for kindly pointing out that comments were down for awhile. They are up and running again. As always, your thoughts are warmly welcome.
This candy-esque chunk was inspired by a gone-by garlic blossom. After a year or so of swearing off Alizarin crimson I am unreservedly back on it again.
My downtown Boulder painting studio will be open to the public from noon to 6 on Saturday and Sunday October 2rd, 3rd, 9th and 10th. You’re warmly invited to stop by and say hello.

A beautiful new documentary about origami. One of the artists interviewed identifies himself as a “material artist” which I found interesting. This is art about the physical properties of planes, folds and paper.
Welcome to “Laura’s Art Blog.” This is my first post. My intention for this blog is to share thoughts about all things related to my art-making including beekeeping, painting, filmmaking and collecting.
I’d love to hear from you so feel free to jump in a leave a comment or two.
