Encaustic is a fancy word for beeswax paint. I make my own encaustic medium from beeswax that my husband Andy and I gather from our own beehives. Encaustic is a uniquely sensual medium. It has warmth. It smells sweet. It holds pigment and texture beautifully. I love the way painting with beeswax connects my paintings in a physical way to the honeybees who inspire them.
2005 Abstractions
This series explores rounded, folded shapes that evoke internal organs or the inner workings of a honeybee hive. My intention was to make simple, well composed paintings that appear warm, moist and penetrable.

Ferns and Labyrinths
These tender little yearners were inspired by labyrinths. I spent a lot of time looking at labyrinths, roots and branches while making them. If you look closely you can see miniature labyrinths embedded in the unfurled fronds of "Blue Fern" and "Joyful Plant."

Cities and gardens are wondrous environments made by humans for the expression and comfort of human life. Honeybees make cities too. The imaginary cities and gardens you see here were inspired by street maps and the wax cities made by honeybees.
